Air Purifier: 5 Different Types and How Does Air Purifier Work?

August 5, 2022 by Sona Gupta Leave a Comment

Do you know how many people die of air pollution in our country every year? There are harmful pollutants, viruses, allergens, and bacteria all around, which we fail to see with our naked eyes.

Inhaling the polluted air can lead to a number of health diseases including congestion, rhinitis, blocked nose, irritation in the eyes, and many more. Pollutants trapped in an enclosed space can be far more dangerous than the contaminants in the outdoor area. Children, elder people, and people who suffer from allergies and respiratory issues can experience the ill effects of pollution.

That is why, it is important to buy the best air purifier in India 2022 and, maintain a cleaner and fresher airflow in your house and office is really important.

Basically, there are 5 Different Types of Air Purifiers that Work in Different Ways.

1. Filters

Commonly known as air cleaners, these air purifiers clean the air by passing it through a filter and removing unnecessary particles. These filters are normally a part of the heating and cooling systems of the house.

It not only removes the contaminants and pollutants but, prevents the damage due to dust or dirt build-up.

These filters are dense with smaller gaps that allow them to catch very small particles. Pleated filters work best because of their increased surface area.

Air filters are expensive and you need to replace them at regular intervals to maintain their functionality. A dirty filter restricts the airflow through the system which causes a drop in overall efficiency.

These filters can consist of any material as long as it meets the HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) standard.

2. Ionizing Purifiers

These air purifiers use a method called corona discharge to create charged molecules, called ions. Most atoms in the air have a neutral charge. The number of positively charged protons is equal to negatively charged electrons. The small but intense field of corona discharge allows molecules to pass through it, knock off an electron leaving a positive charge.

It will charge the larger particles in the air including dust or other contaminants. The charged ions can be easily attracted to the opposite charge.

This air purifier for home consists of two large rods, one is positively charged and the other is negative. The charged particles will be drawn towards the oppositely charged rods and thus the air will be cleaner.

3. Ozone generators

Ozone generators are very much similar to the ionizing purifiers; however, it alters the molecules of oxygen by turning them into ozone. Oxygen exists in dioxygen form in the atmosphere, but when it comes in contact with corona discharge, it splits it into a single form.

The manufacturers of this air purifier claim that this device deodorizes or disinfects the air. Also, the presence of ozone has its own health benefits.

However, ozone is not a stable molecule and it combines with other chemicals readily.

4. Adsorbents

Many purifiers incorporate an adsorbent material to take care of the odors, fumes, and chemicals in the air. In this process, one substance is trapped on the surface of the other substance.

Activated charcoal is one of the most common adsorbents. It is very porous and has many ‘nooks and cronies’ to trap passing molecules. The pores of the charcoal adsorb larger particles in its pores. Electrostatic attraction draws contaminants into the pores of the adsorbent. Many of these react chemically with the charcoal and bond to it. The surface area gives it lots of space for bonding.

If you need an air purifier in Delhi, it can be a good choice.

5. UV Light

UV light is known for its micro-organism sterility and making the air and water harmless.

Looking upon this property, air purifiers are made to bathe the air with UV light. The presence of these rays eliminates the potential harm of airborne bacteria and viruses.

Industrial Philips air purifiers are far more powerful and expensive as compared to household models. However, they ensure a pollutant and contaminant-free environment even in the high-density spaces.

Along with using an air purifier, you need to follow these tips to maintain clean and fresh air.

  • Get rid of the source of the contaminants.
  • The air outside is less contaminated as compared to what you have in your house. Open the windows more often.
  • Use an effective air purifier system.
